Ad Breukel went to school (Gymnasium B) in Hengelo, The Netherlands and subsequently studied Business Administration at the University of Twente with a special focus on information management and development studies. After his graduation in 1989, he started working as a PhD candidate in Groningen at the School of Systems, Organization and Management. His doctoral thesis was finished in 1996 and focused on the strategic use of information technology.
