At a certain stage, very young, a matter of hours of youth, I sorted myself out and became a system of cells, each labeled for what it was to become - brain cells, limbs, liver, the lot - all of them signaling to each other, calculating their territories, laying me out. At one stage I possessed an excellent kidney, good enough for any higher fish; then I thought better and destroyed t all at once, instaling in its place a neater pair for living on land. I didn鈥檛 plan on this when it was going on, but my cells, with a better memory, did.
