Shahr-e-Zohak, also known as the Red City, is an historic landmark in Afghanistan first erected in 507 AD from sandstone. It was a center of religion, philosophy, and art between the 11th and 20th centuries when it was dyed bright colors. In 2001, under Taliban rule, their leader Mullah Omar ordered the city's statues destroyed for being "idols." Since then, several countries and organizations have committed to restoring the historic landmark.
