I focus on plant and bird identification in order to understand and communicate about plant community composition, which in turn sets the stage for the ecosystems we visit or inhabit. Native species are under threat throughout the Midwest: from development, pesticides, fragmentation, invasive species, excess deer browse, and other forces. I seek ways to understand the processes at work and recommend to landowners and community groups how best to proceed to ensure the best conservation practices.
