My dad worked as an iron miner for Reserve Mining in Silver Bay, Minnesota. In the 70's the EPA successfully sued Reserve Mining for dumping waste product from its manufacturing process into Lake Superior. This forced Reserve Mining to take corrective action and build a large reservoir for the leftover product from the mining. This expense, coupled with a decline in the iron market, led to bankruptcy and the loss of many jobs in 1982. Families were financially destroyed and for the next two years, I watched my friends move away because of this event.
