Kickstarting Innovation within the Museum - Presentation at MCN2012 tsven
油
Tim Svenonius' talk for Kickstarting Innovation, at the Museum Computer Network (MCN) conference in Seattle Nov 9, 2012. Panel also included Liz Neely of AIC; Erica Gangsei of SFMOMA, and Don Undeen of the Met.
The document discusses realizing the adjacent possible by embracing disruptive technology, talent, and community to reinvent the present and explore new opportunities at the edges of what is currently possible. It encourages staying focused on long-term goals, saying yes to opportunities, and working together to realize the collective potential through rapid sharing and mutual appreciation. The document is written by Koven J. Smith, Director of Tech at the Denver Art Museum.
The document discusses the Smithsonian Institution's efforts to expand beyond traditional audio tours and help visitors engage more directly with museum exhibits through mobile projects. It notes that over 30 mobile apps and projects have been created so far, allowing users to access content about objects like Alexander Graham Bell's telephone and Eli Whitney's cotton gin patent model. The goal is to help visitors do more of the talking about what they see rather than just listening to pre-recorded audio tours.

Panel session given at MCN2012. This slide deck is the introduction, and was followed by talks from Arfon Smith (Director of Citizen Science at the Adler Planetarium and Technical Lead of the Zooniverse projects) and Jeff Holmes (Digital content editor, Encyclopedia of Life).
Session abstract:
Citizen science describes methodologies and technologies that allow members of the public to contribute actively to gathering, improving and analysing data. Museums, particularly natural history and science museums have started to utilise citizen science techniques to provide a way to increase the speed and volume of information processing that can be undertaken. Datasets published openly and online can be made available for transcription, pattern recognition and visual analysis. The skills of enthusiastic amateurs can be utilised to gather new data for research and to add to existing collections datasets. In this panel the benefits to museum research and collections of citizen science approaches will be presented, along with case studies and discussions of technologies for large scale public data analysis.
This document discusses research on how museums are using social media and the degree of participation in their social media postings. It outlines dimensions of analysis including content, frequency, and engagement. Findings are presented for content, showing most museums reuse content and use platform tools but few have live content. Frequency findings show most post every day. Engagement findings show most museums engage once a week or less. The document contrasts different levels of participation from public relations to co-curating projects with users.
Ed Rodley's blog post discusses how blogging has evolved from a personal notebook to a way to share ideas and bring new ideas to colleagues. Blogging allows one to explore ideas with interested people and connect with people worldwide. While operating without an institutional persona can be tricky, blogging has helped the author learn that content is still king and people are hungry for reports from the field. The blog discusses blogging as a form of personal and professional development.
Multi-Sensory Design Towards Inclusion and AccessCorey Timpson

An examination of use of multi-sensory design tactics and affordances and how they can facilitate inclusion and access and where they fall short. Call outs to specific considerations that are citical to these affordances.

A look at my approach to audience engagement through the use of digital integration with in-gallery installation, remote audience participation, and sustainable underlying infrastructure. Approach is followed by several practical examples and the strategic opportunities they each achieve through digital integration.

Transmedia storytelling: bringing the static to life and accomplishing several strategic objectives with 360属 experience design. CMA 2017 presentation.
This handson workshop invites participants to learn about inclusive design principles and develop basic accessibility assessment skills. In the first half, participants will employ accessibility standards developed at the Canada Science and Technology Museum and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to evaluate various exhibits. Findings and ideas for remediation will be shared in small group discussions. In the second half of the workshop, participants will use interactive design process to develop an inclusive exhibit or activity. This will include idea generation, mockups, testing, and re 5 designs. The workshop will close with a roundtable discussion focusing on best practices for museums hoping to improve their sites accessibility and capacity to work inclusively. Throughout the morning, participants will be encouraged to ask questions, work collaboratively, and solicit feedback on their ideas.

This document discusses the inclusive design approach taken for a museum project. It began with establishing an Inclusive Design Advisory Council to provide guidance and ensure all audiences and abilities were considered. An iterative design process was used, involving prototyping and testing at every phase. This included extensive testing and input on exhibit design, digital experiences, products, and the mobile app to ensure usability and accessibility. Facilities were also designed above building code standards. The work is ongoing to continually evolve and adapt the museum experiences to be as inclusive as possible.
The document discusses the accessible museum design approach of inclusive design. It advocates designing exhibits, facilities, digital experiences, and products from the outset with all audiences and abilities in mind. An inclusive design methodology is used, including input from an advisory council. The museum has implemented this approach through exhibits, digital installations, mobile apps, and facilities that go beyond building codes to be as accessible as possible. An iterative process of prototyping and testing ensures continued evolution and improvement. The greatest success is inclusive design becoming a key part of the museum's culture.

This document discusses the implementation of an Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Some key points:
- The ECMS will allow content to be stored once and then referenced across different platforms and channels, avoiding redundant production.
- It will separate content from presentation for flexibility and sustainability as needs change over time.
- The system is designed to empower content developers and create an efficient workflow where assets can be acquired, catalogued, and made live without extensive production steps.
- This provides benefits like spending resources on new projects rather than maintenance and allowing constant growth and adaptation of digital experiences over time within resource constraints.
