A valuable lesson that I learned as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kiribati is that the most important person in the world is a bridge builder. On my outer island of Abaiang, mail is eagerly anticipated and cherished. On a hot humid day off, I rode my bike to retrieve my mail and then continue on to visit another volunteer, an education worker who lived near the government station (even though it was another hour and a half ride past the three hours to the government station.) I gave my friend her mail, which she appreciatively read while I rested and drank the rest of my water. One of her friends made the off-hand comment that she wasn't a rocket scientist and she should figure out somewher
