I'm named after Earl K(emp) Long (8/26/1895 9/5/1960), three time Louisiana governor (1939 1940, 1948 1952, and 1956 1960) and governor at the time UNO was first established in 1956. I wasn't opened until 1964, though, 4 years after my namesake died. Long was one of nine children born in north central Louisiana. He was an attorney and served as Lieutenant Governor before being elected Governor for the first time. Earl K. Long was a colorful politician and at one time was committed to undergo psychiatric care. He had heart problems through his later life and died of a heart attack after being admitted to the hospital for food poisoning.
