Slavery in America involved people being owned by others without freedom or choice. Slaves were required to obey their masters and faced punishments like whippings, shackles, or contraptions if they disobeyed orders. Slaves lived in meager housing with little furniture and clothing, worked from sunrise to sunset with only occasional days off, and spent free time mending homes, making items, or singing as most were not allowed to read, write, or own money.
