[Movie Review] 500 Days of Summer

(500) Days of Summer chronicles the bittersweet beginnings and untimely endings of a relationship between Tom and Summer that is not meant to be. The movie uses a nonlinear narrative, jumping between different days in their relationship represented by title cards, in order to convey what Tom is feeling throughout the ups and downs. While it is a romantic movie, it subverts expectations by avoiding cliches like a tragic middle and happy ending, and instead feels like an emotional rollercoaster as their relationship unravels. Some deleted scenes that were found provide additional context but the filmmakers' final cut remains an impactful work.
