1. TSA: Profiling Muslims regardless of their background.
TSA has been in the news many times the past few years for questionable practices in the
attempt to identify legitimate threats and questionable people while balancing security
against respecting the rights and privacy of passengers.
Typically, investigations by the US media fail to showcase the profiling of Muslims
wrongly suspected or accused of being a terrorist who find themselves on the US
government black list for no reason other than having a common name with someone
who could be a potential treat to the American people.
Innocents as varied as journalist Drew Griffin of CNN and the late Senator Kennedy
found themselves on the USA terrorist list along with me, a devout, practicing Muslim, a
Shia Islam scholar who has worked extensively for years trying to help improve the
safety of the American people. Nothing is more frustrating, insulting and confusing than
that I wound up on the watch list. Worse, how do I get off the list?
In the past few years, many Muslims have been denied boarding flights simply because
of their attire. Some had beards and head cover. Others were banned because they
became confrontational or were nervous and agitated and no reason was provided. Many
have been denied flights because of their black hair and brown eyes.
As someone who is on the US government Terrorist list and has been frustrated in trying
to get off the list, this article is aimed at educating the American public about what it
means to be a practicing Muslim and standup for America. Instead of being rewarded, we
are insulted so often it is becoming a reason for many Muslims to stay silent even when
they may see or suspect a potential treat to American safety.
I have brought this issue to the attention of Congressman Van Hollen of Maryland. He
and his office have been working with me on a number of issues. Senator Coburns
office and his Chief of Staff, a close contact, are well informed about the constant insults
I receive from TSA. Other Congressmen and Senators with whom I have worked on
different issues I have been informed of this harassment.
The law enforcement units that I have worked with have also been informed about these
issues but it seems that each section of the US government works in isolation and
seclusion; not sharing or coordinating all the information. Therefore, they all say We
understand your frustration but there is nothing we can do.
This article is based on facts; boarding passes with a series of security codes at the
bottom as well as being red flagged by different signals. I am not a hearsay type of person
and anytime an investigation is set up I well be more than happy to provide information.
Every time I fly I am searched or my bag gets opened or I am delayed going to my flight.
I endure a number of other insults, including not letting me on flight all together. I have
2. been told this is just a random search. TSA doesnt seem to understand that not every
Muslim is ignorant and uneducated. Seven out of seven is not a random number. It is a
Miracle!
My education background is psychology and computer. My interests are in linguistic and
body language as well as national security. If the US government had not repeatedly
insulted me, I could have put my talents to use addressing many of the issues and threats
facing America.
I am a highly intuitive person of faith with great and extensive contacts in the Middle
East. I had no advance information and had nothing to do with it but I had a premonition
of 911 the day before but had nowhere to turn. I did have information on Bin Laden that I
relayed in numerous, still kept, e-mails to those who had a say in the war in Afghanistan.
Frustrated, it has come to the point for many like me, that if we were to find ourselves
sitting next to a person on the US terrorist wanted list we might be tempted to take the
Fifth. Although my work and worth for America has been re-paid by insults, it is a gift
that keeps on giving.
I have one thing to say to the US government. The more insults we Muslims receive, the
less we are inclined to help solve the Radical Islamist issue. Instead of being rewarded for
helping, it seems the resulting attitude, as the Vice President of Front Page magazine
once wrote me, is, A good Muslim is a dead Muslim. It seems sincerity has no place in
DC politics. No matter how many times I have offered information or to answer any
questions about my background, the government seems to prefer the alternative method
of poking around behind my back looking for an ulterior motive. The truth doesnt have
any merit in DC politics.
Persians have a proverb, A thief or a liar assumes everyone is his own kind. Because of
the lies and deception in politics, many of those hurting America are in the halls of
Congress and Senate. Or, those who work behind the scene as think tank scholars and
directors, in foundations and 501c3 NGO shells, will turn friends to enemies and rely on
foes instead of friends. This is an honest assessment by a Muslim who is trying to help
America to wake up before it is too late.
Ghazal Omid.
