The Ku Klux Klan was originally formed in 1865 by former Confederate soldiers opposed to Reconstruction. It aimed to intimidate freed slaves and Republicans through threats, violence and murder. Though outlawed in 1871, the KKK saw a resurgence in the early 20th century fueled by the film "Birth of a Nation" and the lynching of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager accused of murdering a girl. A new KKK was launched in 1915 led by William Simmons, adopting some of the original goals but also promoting Protestantism, nativism and prohibition. - 1. Exposé Ku Klux Klan It’s a white supremacist terrosist hate group. Their targets are Jews, immigrants, leftists, homosexuals, Catholics (only at the beginning), Muslims and atheists. The Klan has existed in three distinct eras : - The first Klan was founded in Tennessee on Christmas’ eve 1865 by six former officers of the Confederate Army. They were founded just after slavery was abolished. At the beginning, only former officers of the Confederate Army could wear the white pointed hood to restore white protestant supremacy. Fires, rapes, murders and hanging were their means of action. The KKK was officially banned in 1870. However, it continued to exist underground between 1871 and 1915 but it had less and less reasons to exist. - However, the 7th art, with the movie Birth of a nation by D. W. Griffith, makes the apology of the Klan from 1915. The movie presents how the white men protect white women from « evil black men ». The KKK rised from its ashes and had 5 million members in 1925 and had a more social and commercial face because of Simmons who decided to relaunch the KKK as something commercial. Between 1915 and 1926, it’s the Golden Age of the KKK. And even 40 000 Klansmen paraded in front of the White House on August 8th 1925, that almost institutionalize the Klan. But one of the most popular Klansman was condamned for the rape and the murder of a white woman, Madge Oberholtzer even if one of the main goal of the KKK was to protect white women. So it ends up sinking during the 30’s. - After that, the most violent KKK reborn with more marginal members. There were more and more murders and the link with the governement and the police was definitely broken. They leave their home towns to go to the states where weapons legislation is less important or almost not existing. They took advantage of Trump presidency and the fact that the police was more concerned by the leftists and terrorism. They also extanded after Obama was elected president. Now, the KKK count almost 6 000 members.
