Ian Burnett has researched has published more that 125 refereed conference and journal papers in the areas of speech and audio processing and multimedia delivery. He has filed a series of patents in these areas and holds both Australian and US patents. His original research area was speech compression, expanding into audio compression and now the processing of spatial audio for compression in teleconferencing and virtual environments. In the areas of multimedia delivery and metadata, he has taken a leading role in MPEG-21 and has chaired the Multimedia Description Schemes subgroup at MPEG since 2004.
