ACADEMIC PROJECTS:

National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore (Jun 2013 - Nov 2014)
Title: A Comparative Study Of Two And Three Bladed Mini UAV Propellers Having Same Solidity
Dissertation of the project:
National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) is one of the premiere institute for aerospace R&D
under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). CSIR-NAL has been involved in the
development of a 300 mm & 450 mm span Fixed wing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) and a 2 Kg class mini
unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the past few years. Propulsion system for most of the mini UAVs
uses fixed pitch propeller as a means for producing thrust. These propellers operates at very low
Reynolds numbers which is mostly below 100,000. Designing of efficient propellers and wings at this
low Reynolds numbers is extremely difficult, as in this regimes the propeller has to face the
dominance of viscous forces and laminar boundary layer separations. In mini UAV design,
consideration of efficiency is most important, as high efficiency of the propeller leads to higher
endurance which is the most important thing in designing of a mini UAVs. It is a common
assumption that number of blades in the propeller has a small effect of efficiency. But as the
number of blades increases it leads to more even distribution of thrust and power even in the wake
flows. The choice of no blades for the selection or design of the propeller is a tricky situation for a
mini UAV designer. Many parameters such as power consumption, blade solidity, advance ratio etc.
will get influenced while trying to increase or decrease the number of blades of a propeller. In the
present work two propellers namely, two bladed 11 inch diameter and three bladed 9.5 inch
diameter propeller are designed using minimum induced loss method for a mini UAV. The blade
solidity and design advance ratio of both propeller is maintained same by adjusting the diameter,
chord length and propeller rotational speed. Performance evaluation of both the propellers for
different operating conditions are carried out using Simple blade element momentum theory and
3D CFD analysis using ANSYS FLUENT. The performance of both the propeller are compared and
discussed in the present study.

Title: Creating A Large Turbulence Inside The Combustion Chamber Using Perforated Plate
Dissertation of the project:
The objective of the project was to develop a can annular combustion chamber for high
efficiency & performance. This can be done by creating a large turbulent flow inside a combustion
chamber by placing a thin perforated plate in combustor area. By placing a thin perforated plate in
the mixing region, the air-fuel got rapidly mixed as the perforated holes increases turbulence
thereby the Static pressure & combustion efficiency. The modelling of the combustion system was
done in CATIA V5, unstructural meshing done in Ansys-Gambit and computational analysis were
carried out using Ansys-Fluent.
