This document discusses asthma, including its symptoms and treatments. Asthma is a chronic lung condition characterized by tightening of the bronchial muscles and airway inflammation. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness. It is usually diagnosed based on a discussion of symptoms and physical exam. Rescue medications are inhaled directly into the lungs to provide quick relief from asthma symptoms and work within 5-10 minutes. Controller medications are taken daily to prevent asthma symptoms and reduce airway inflammation. People with asthma should always carry their rescue inhaler with them.
