Effective Dashboard Design: Why Your Baby Is Ugly (Big Design Conference 2010)Aaron Hursman
油
[Note: This version was presented at the Big Design Conference on May 29, 2010]
As enterprises and other organizations look to sift through and make sense of the all the structured and unstructured data available to them, dashboards are being positioned as the solution to their problems. However, a dashboard needs special attention to the visual design or the dashboard will fail to meet expectations. If not carefully designed, a new dashboard can leave consumers unsatisfied, frustrated, confused, and even overwhelmed.
Aaron Hursman will share his experiences designing effective dashboards that deliver on the promise of targeted, accessible, and actionable information. He will discuss examples from both his personal work and contributions of thought-leaders in this space. Through these examples, he will present practical dashboard design techniques. He will also present effective approaches to take during design and construction. Finally, Aaron will explain the challenges and obstacles that dashboard designers face today, and how to mitigate the risks that result.

Data is meaningless without proper representation. It is most useful when understood through interaction. WSO2 Dashboard Server brings the ability to design interactive dashboards that can give you insights into data through drill-down views.
Dashboards can be shared among and customized by users to match their preferences. WSO2 Dashboard Server allows each visualization gadget to be wired in the user interface. Each gadget is limited to interacting with a well defined set of input and output data types. This makes it possible for gadgets, even in an interactive dashboard, to be loosely coupled. In this session we will explore some of the enterprise use cases that can be achieved with WSO2 Dashboard Server via its multiple interactive elements.

Designing Great Dashboards for SaaS and Enterprise ApplicationsDesign for Context
油
This document outlines best practices for designing dashboards, including answering meaningful questions about the user and their goals, providing relevant role-based views of data, using appropriate visualization metaphors, and balancing instance-level and rollup data views. The presentation discusses common dashboard patterns and components, when an application might need a dashboard, and how to ensure a good user experience.
This document discusses simple screen casting tools that can be used to create educational tutorials. It provides examples of screen casting software like Camtasia Studio that allows users to record their screen and narration. The document outlines the process of conceptualizing, storyboarding, and distributing tutorials. It also discusses using screen casts to demonstrate tasks or activities to supplement textual instructions for students. Teachers can guide students in creating their own simple instructional screen casts to develop creativity skills like analysis, synthesis, and promotion.
This document summarizes a presentation on learner experience design. It discusses conducting user research through methods like interviews, empathy mapping and personas to understand learner needs. Journey mapping is presented as a way to map out the learner journey and identify pain points. Prototyping solutions through sketching and storyboarding allows iterating designs based on feedback. Experience design is framed as taking a learner-centered approach to orchestrating the overall experience across an organization through collaboration between different teams. The goal is to adopt practices that improve the experience at all levels of an educational system or program.
This document discusses instructional design history, ADDIE model, backwards design, web accessibility, online accessibility principles, open educational resources, and the importance of rubrics in higher education. It provides definitions and examples of key concepts and emphasizes that online courses should be accessible to all students regardless of ability. Rubrics are important for clearly communicating expectations and standards of achievement in online courses where face-to-face interaction is limited.
Christine Seideman provided an advanced Blackboard training covering the basics of setting up courses in Blackboard including banners, syllabi, schedules, and instructor information. Various online tools are presented for planning lessons, collecting assessment data, trying new strategies, and connecting with other educators. The document encourages teachers to find the right tools and people to support innovative teaching with technology.
From Recommendations to Reality: Designing Effective Online TutorialsLindsey McLean
油
The document outlines recommendations for designing effective online tutorials, including instructional and visual/technical considerations. It discusses planning tutorials around student needs, incorporating active learning, communication, testing, visual clarity, navigation, and accessibility. The summary emphasizes applying recommendations like interactivity, dividing content clearly, and allowing user control, while acknowledging recommendations may conflict and problems will occur. Faculty needs must also be balanced.
Usability testing is a technique used to evaluate a website or application by testing it with real users. It involves having users complete typical tasks while observing them to identify any usability issues or areas for improvement. Key aspects of usability testing include recruiting 5-8 representative users, having them complete tasks while thinking aloud, and analyzing both quantitative metrics like task completion times as well as qualitative feedback to identify themes and inform design recommendations.
Usability testing is a technique used to evaluate a website or application by testing it with real users. It involves having users complete typical tasks while observing them to identify any usability issues or areas for improvement. The key steps in usability testing include orienting users, having them complete tasks while thinking aloud, and debriefing afterwards. Findings from usability testing include both quantitative data like task completion times as well as qualitative data from user feedback, which are then analyzed together to form recommendations.
Blendspace is a tool that allows teachers to create multimedia presentations by gathering various resources into one space. It can be used for flipped classrooms by having students access lesson materials online before class. Blendspace also supports differentiation by including different materials at varying levels to meet diverse student needs and learning styles. The presentation explores how to use Blendspace's capabilities to incorporate higher-level thinking, inquiry-based learning, and the flipped classroom model into lessons.
Universal Design for Assessment (UDA) seeks to remove barriers that inhibit learners from demonstrating their knowledge on assessments. UDA calls for testing important domain knowledge, not just easy-to-assess content. Web-based tools can be used to design, deliver, and manage universally designed assessments in flexible digital formats that provide multiple ways for all learners to engage with content and show what they know. Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation provide a framework for assessing training programs, starting with learner reactions and moving to measuring knowledge gained, application of skills, and business impact.
SWiSH max is a multimedia program used to create Flash files. It allows users to add text, images, sounds and create animations through a timeline interface. The program is designed for high school students and designers to develop websites, presentations and stories. Teachers can provide media and direct students to engage their imagination. Students can create presentations and design lessons to help teachers and express themselves. Key features include scripting, drawing and templates. However, it does not support video. The software helps students learn by planning and presenting lessons, and learning from others' presentations.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula that enables all individuals to gain knowledge and skills regardless of their abilities. It is based on the principles of providing multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement. UDL aims to reduce barriers in learning by utilizing flexible tools and technologies that appeal to diverse learners. When implemented effectively through creative teaching methods, UDL has the potential to change learning outcomes and ensure success for all students.
