This document discusses a simplified letter format called the AMS format. It omits the salutation since the writer may not know the reader's name or marital status. Instead, it uses a subject line in all capital letters, double or triple spaced, to replace the salutation. Like the blocked format, all lines begin at the left margin. This format streamlines the letter by including a subject line but removing the salutation and signature.
