About
After twenty-five years as a practicing theoretical nuclear physicist, Joe became intrigued with the research issues involved in the teaching of physics. He switched to Physics Education Research (PER) in 1992 and established a Physics Education Research Group in the University of Maryland Physics Department. Since then, he and his research colleagues have carried out research on student expectations and epistemologies, worked on cognitive modeling of problem solving, and on the role of mathematics in physics learning. They have developed problems, tutorials, interactive lecture demonstrations, and laboratories.
