The ALS Dept was founded as the Black-Hispanic Studies Dept following a Black Students campaign for Black Studies and greater inclusion of minoritized US racial & ethnic populations. One of the first Dept Chairs Dr. Guy Mhone (Malawi) 1943-2005, became an internationally renowned development economist.
