Sam Walton was once the richest man in the world through his creation of Walmart. Though he came from humble beginnings in rural Oklahoma during the Great Depression, he saw opportunities where others saw failures in the discount retail market. After working for JC Penney and owning a successful Ben Franklin franchise, Walton opened the first Walmart store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas, selling products cheaper by buying directly from manufacturers. Through his small town values of customer service and low prices, Walton's vision for retail transformed the industry and he grew Walmart into the largest corporation in the world before his death in 1992.
