This document discusses environmental arguments for purchasing an existing house in the Netherlands. It analyzes the social practice of house purchasing using a social practices approach. Focus groups revealed that the current practice of house purchasing involves little consideration of environmental factors. The system of provision for house purchasing, including real estate agents and other providers, helps reinforce practices that do not prioritize sustainability. Different levels of potential environmental innovations in housing are identified, from building in a sustainable neighborhood to a fully sustainable house, but consumers differ in the narratives and concerns that match their preferences.
