Introduction:
2
In 1952 at the University of Washington, Dr. Robert Bruce and Wayne Quinton
designed the first exercising treadmill to diagnose heart and lung diseases and
today it can be seen in many places such as hospitals, clubs, homes and hotels.
Furthermore, treadmill can be described generally as a device for exercising
walking or running while the user still in the same place. The main advantage of
using treadmill is to keep up users with their exercising program whereas the
weather is not suitable outside or if they want to watch TV whilst doing the exercise
thus preventing TV from being a sedentary activity. Also, treadmill may have
special features which vary according to the available specifications like the
traveled distance, calories burned and heart rate which help users to track their
results and progress.
In this case study, a treadmill Under the trade name " F1 Smart " that is
manufactured by the company "Life fitness" will be investigated as an interface.
This case study will examine the practicality of the selected treadmill and the
analysis will be covered through five main sections. The first section will provide a
full description of interface. The second section will visualize a number of clear
images of the interface. The third section will include the Hierarchical Task Analysis
diagram and will represent graphical and textual HTA. The fourth section will
evaluate the usability and design criteria of the interface. The final section will
include suggestions for improvements and references.

The "F1 Smart" Treadmill is the latest model from the company "Life fitness" and it
is designed to bring the joy of exercising at home. It combines many innovations
and its has many Specifications.
The F1 Smart doesn't need too much space as it only needs 196 cm of length
by 87 cm of width as it can be seen in figure 1.
From figure 2, the interface of the treadmill is very clear and has colorful
buttons, and the instructions are clear and obvious.
Figures 3 and 4 show the buttons that indicate types of workout programs,
selecting the speed, setting incline, stop , pause/resume. Moreover, all the
buttons are labeled in a way that can be reached easily.
Also, figure 4 shows a screen in the middle of the interface that shows the
information of the current workout and settings by the user.
Figure 5 shows the Ultra-efficient Energy Saver button and it is also labeled
clearly.
Users can save the results and progresses of their workouts by using the USB
port feature then upload the result to the "Life Fitness: LFconnect" website
which track the users progresses and helps with setting their goals as it can
be seen in figure 6.
Safety standards in "F1 smart" treadmill have been considered. For instance,
there is a handle on both sides that the user can use for more stability during
exercises as it can be illustrated from figure 8. Also, the front handle in figure
9 is used to provide more stability for the user while exercising as well as
measuring heart rate and the red "stop" button with thread that can be
reached easily in case of emergencies so the treadmill will stop immediately
as it can be visualized from figure 7.
6
The "F1 smart" treadmill has the FlexDeck速 Shock Absorption System as its
shown in figure 10. It helps absorbing the continues shocks as a result of the
user's movement that creates a reaction against the running surface and the
system will provide an ideal exercising experience that is slimier to outdoor
exercising conditions.
Figure 11 shows the IPod base where user can plug the iPod to listen to
music and charge it too.
Figure 12 shows multi-use shelves that provide users with space to put
anything like bottles, towels, remote control or phone, etc.

Interface evaluation:
Criteria Yes/No Why?
Usability
effective Yes
The F1 smart treadmill provides useful features to the user
including different types of exercises like walking, running, etc.
Also, results and data can be saved which enables users to track
their goals. Furthermore, users can listen to their favorite music as
IPod is compatible with the F1 smart treadmill.
efficient yes
The treadmill starts very fast and in a couple of seconds the user
can start exercising just by using the buttons on the interface that
linked directly to the type of the desired exercise program as well
as there is a screen that shows the results directly while exercising.
Also, all the handles provides stability to the user during the
11
exercise and the front handle has built in sensors to measure heart
rates instantly. Moreover, saving and transferring the data from the
F1 smart treadmill only takes few seconds by using a USB.
Safe to use Yes
The F1 smart has high safety standards and its very safe to use due
to the availability of handles on the sides and at the front to provide
stability to users and help them whenever they may lose balance
and control. Also, there is a red stop button for emergency to stop
the treadmill straight away just by pulling off the attached cord to
the red button. Users can change the settings of the workout easily
during exercise by placing one hand on any of the available handles
and use the other hand to press buttons.
Utility Yes
This machine is very useful because it enables users to achieve
their goals and to exercise at home whenever the weather is not
appropriate outside. Also, the dimensions of the treadmill are
reasonable and it can be fitted easily in any empty space at home.
Easy to
learn
Yes
Buttons descriptions are very clear and enable the user to learn
about the machine in very short time without any confusion. Also,
the screen provides guidance to the user on how to use the
different functions of the treadmill.
memorable Yes
It is memorable because it has a lot of features that provide the
users a unique experience that it won't be forgotten. the fact that
the results can be saved and tracked gives the users the motivation
to set higher and challenging goals which make it really exciting to
use the machine continuously.
enjoyable Yes Users can spend time exercising while listening to music and enjoy
the experience at home regardless the weather outside.
Design principles
Visibility Yes
The font size is good, use of colors is very practical (red to stop,
green to start workout warm up), instructions and indicators in
the small screen are clear and obvious.
Affordance Yes All the objects are labeled on the treadmill in a way that prevents
users from getting lost which make it practical to use.
12
feedback Yes
The machine provides a visual feedback as all the information
appear in the screen like speed, types of workouts, inclines and
other functions. Also, if the user hold the front handle (placing both
hands on the built in sensor) then the heart rate will be displayed
on the screen.
Consistency Yes
The interface design is reliable because all buttons have almost
same size, color, font size and the same alignments which give
consistency design to the F1 smart treadmill.
Constraints Yes
The screen gives instructions to the user and if the user presses a
wrong button no action will happen (the machine waits for the
correct input to perform the task). For saving the result, user has
to register in the website and follow all the steps in order to set up
an account before plugging his/ her own USB. otherwise, the
treadmill will not be able to save the data of workouts.
Improvements:
Although, the "F1 Smart" treadmill is considered one of the best treadmills in the market,
there is always room for improvement. one of the suggestions is to make a touch screen
to save user's time as it is easier than using buttons because user has to keep his/her eyes
on both the keyboard and screen to check if the correct function is chosen. Other
suggestions are listed below:
Provide the ability to set a password for the treadmill in order to prevent children
from using it without a supervision from parents.
Make the treadmill to be available in different colors to suit the user's style and
comfort.
Include voice instructions along with the available written instructions on screen as
that gives the user the freedom to use the treadmill without looking into the screen.
13
Include a voice recognition feature which is similar to that used in IPHONE where
the user can request the type of workouts and functions and enter his information
using his voice without the need to touch any buttons.
Include a Brielle language so blind people can easily use the machine.
Design a bigger screen than the available one which will provide the user with a
better view and clear readings.
