Subject: UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference on Economic Assessment of
desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid
and dry sub-humid area, Bonn, Germany, 9 to 12 April 2013
Dear Mr. Patil,
The secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification
(UNCCD) would like to invite you, in your capacity as scientist, to the UNCCD 2nd
Scientific Conference that will be held at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany,
from Tuesday, 9 April 2013 (3 p.m.) to Friday, 12 April 2013 (1 p.m.) This invitation is
based on your pre-registration through the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference website.
Pursuant to decision 16/COP.9 adopted by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the
United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the UNCCD 2nd Scientific
Conference will discuss the Economic Assessment of desertification, sustainable land
management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid area. This important event
will be organized under the guidance of the Bureau of the Committee on Science and
Technology (CST) of the UNCCD and the Global Risk Forum (GRF) Davos as the selected
lead institution.
The UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference will be held in the context of the Third
Special Session of the CST (CST S-3) with the participation of various stakeholders and
invited scientists from all regions. Kindly take note that this invitation is limited to your
participation to the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference only and not valid for participation to
the inter-governmental session of the CST S-3, which will be held in morning of 9 April and
the afternoon of 12 April.
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that participants will be responsible
for getting their own visas, hotel reservations and any type of health or other insurance they
may need. Participants requiring visas must therefore obtain these from the embassies or
consulates of the Federal Republic of Germany in their country of residence before arrival to
Bonn. Participants failing to comply with the customs requirements regarding entry into the
Federal Republic of Germany will not be allowed by the local authorities to enter the country.
The secretariat will not be responsible for any loss, damage, or injury to any person or
property arising from your travel and stay during the meeting.

In addition, participants who did not attend a previous session of the Conference of
the Parties or subsidiary bodies meetings of the UNCCD should send a standard passport
photograph in jpeg format to the e-mail secretariat@unccd.int in order to facilitate the
registration process. The registration of participants starts on Monday, 8 April 2013.
For any logistical information, an advance copy of the document entitled Information
for participants (ICCD/CST(S-3)/INF.1-ICCD/CRIC(11)/INF.1) will shortly be made
available on the UNCCD website. Other information on the programme and content of the
