Nanostructured diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs), obtained by substitutional doping of compound semiconductor nanocrystalline lattices with transition metal ions, have emerged as a promising class of materials for spin-electronics (spintronics).
This alternative technology relies on coupling of electron spin and charge degrees of freedom, and it may allow for a fast, energy efficient, and non-volatile information transmission, processing, and storage. Synthesis and fundamental understanding of DMS nanostructures at the molecular and single nanostructure levels is essential for implementation of these materials for novel nanotechnological applications.
