Social networking websites have evolved significantly since early sites in the 1990s. Modern sites allow users to connect through sharing content, messages, and activities. While social media makes communication easier and allows networking on a large scale, there are also criticisms such as privacy and security issues. Successful founders like Mark Zuckerberg created hugely popular sites like Facebook and showed how social media can be profitable. However, overuse of social media may encourage antisocial behaviors and vague assumptions about others. Overall social networking provides benefits of easy connections but also risks if not used carefully.

Adolescents face challenges in finding their identity as they try different roles. They experience confusion over who they should be. The main tasks of adolescence include dealing with conflicts with parents, peers becoming more important, and mood changes. Adolescents are influenced both by their parents and peers, though studies show they cannot be influenced by both. Risky behaviors like smoking increase as friends' influence grows during adolescence. Around 39% of adolescents suffer from low self-esteem, which tends to drop during ages 9-13 and again from 18-23. When life becomes difficult, some adolescents make wrong choices that make them feel guilty.

Erving Goffman was a prominent Canadian-American sociologist born in 1922 in Alberta, Canada. He studied chemistry and sociology at the University of Manitoba and University of Toronto, collecting data for his doctoral dissertation on the Scottish island of Unst from 1949-1951. In 1958, he began teaching at the University of California, Berkeley where he published his influential books The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life in 1959 and Asylum in 1961. Goffman resigned from Berkeley in 1968 and took a position at the University of Pennsylvania, publishing Frame Analysis in 1974. Considered one of the most influential sociologists of the 20th century, Goffman examined how people manage impressions and adopt roles in social situations

The current case count is 739 from Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas. 71 individuals have required hospitalization, and 3 deaths, 2 children in Texas and one adult in New Mexico. These fatalities mark the first measles-related deaths in the United States since 2015 and the first pediatric measles death since 2003. The YSPH Virtual Medical Operations Center Briefs (VMOC) were created as a service-learning project by faculty and graduate students at the Yale School of Public Health in response to the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. Each year, the VMOC Briefs are produced by students enrolled in Environmental Health Science Course 581 - Public Health Emergencies: Disaster Planning and Response. These briefs compile diverse information sources – including status reports, maps, news articles, and web content– into a single, easily digestible document that can be widely shared and used interactively. Key features of this report include: - Comprehensive Overview: Provides situation updates, maps, relevant news, and web resources. - Accessibility: Designed for easy reading, wide distribution, and interactive use. - Collaboration: The “unlocked" format enables other responders to share, copy, and adapt seamlessly. Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
