I've been in and around the design field for nearly 20 years: I've designed and managed UX teams both in France and in the UK, and mentored at Springboard (now TechStars London) too.
For me, design is about problem-solving more than anything. The role of a designer is to come up with novel concepts where required, but also make sure those are realistic and achievable. Cooperation is key.
With an education in product and industrial design, I was amazed how applicable the concepts of ergonomy, shape and functions translate from this field to software design. I'm used to testing ideas, concepts and prototypes to validate them as soon and frequently as possible.
