As a freshman at Temple University in Philadelphia, Marty began making an impact as a sportscaster for a Philly radio station. Interning at the station even before starting college, he was assigned as a beat reporter to cover the Phillies, and in the fall of 1980 found himself covering a World Championship season. He was soon interviewing Phillies fans into the early hours of the next morning, as they streamed down Broad Street after the team's clinching World Series victory.
