In the past twenty years, European surveys have shown that one major health problem is work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the lumbar spine. The latest Eurostat report (Health and safety at work in Europe 1999-2007, Eurostat, 2008) shows that 29.5% of working population is affected by such disorders. The scientific literature has long reported on the relationship between manual material handling (MMH) and low back injury, or damage of the lumbar spine. The problem is tackled with psychophysical, biomechanical and physiological approaches (Chaffin DB, 1978; Nelson NA, 2009; Marras WS et. al., 2010).
