There are approximately 250,000 child soldiers worldwide. Child soldiers, 40% of whom are girls, are most commonly found in countries such as Chad, the Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Burundi, Colombia, Liberia, and Myanmar. Children are recruited through abduction, forced recruitment of villages, or in rare cases voluntarily. Once recruited, child soldiers face drug dependencies, physical and psychological trauma, teen pregnancy, lack of education, and rejection from families. They are used for combat as well as non-combat roles like porters and spies.
