On
the
Big
islands
southeastern
side,
Kamilo Point
looks
like
a
wasteland,
despite
its
tide
pools
and
pockets
of
lava
rock.
One
thing
which
makes
Hawaii
ugly
is
TRASH.
5. 9/23/17
FACT:
In
just
a
few
months,
the
Hawaii
Wildlife
Fund
(HWF)
collected
and
hauled
away 15,000
pounds
of
trash,
nylon
nets
and
fishing
line from
Kamilo
Beach.
Trash is not only bad
appearance, its real
problem.
7. 9/23/17
Junk
vehicles
also
collect
sitting
water,
which
provides
a
breeding
ground
for
insects
and
other
pests,
such
as
rats,
parasites
and
lice,
which
might
transmit
various
diseases
to
humans.
8. 9/23/17
Deteriorate
and
leaks,
such
as
oil
and
battery
acid,
pollute
the
surroundings
and
can
cause
risk
to
the
health
and
safety
of
people
and
animals.

The
U.S.
Navys
Red
Hill
Bulk
Fuel
Storage
Facility
holds
twenty
fuel
storage
tanks,
18
of
which
are
active.
Total,
these
tanks
store
225
million
gallons
of
jet
fuel
or
marine
diesel
These fuel tanks sit on top of the
water aquifer that serves 600,000
residents and visitors
11. 9/23/17
The facility has leaked more than 30
times with the last known leak occurring in
January 2014, when 27,000 gallons of fuel
was released from a single tank.
