Lets look at NoveList Select.
From an OCLC report: more people are aware that their library has a coffee shop than that the library has online databases. What can libraries do to increase awareness of library services?
From Library Journals Patron Profiles chart Figure 16 all the action is in the catalog. What can you do to put more information in your catalog?
A typical catalog tells readers whether or not your library has the item requested. But what happens when the item is not available? Do you offer the reader any other options?
The catalog is the librarys most frequently used resource. Is it delivering what library users really want?In a study of online catalog users by the Evansville Public Library, IN:78% of customers requested Similar Titles Recommendations.72% of customers said that having Series Information available was important to them.
Catalog enrichment makes your bibliographic records better by adding richer supplemental content. Information is delivered to people as they use the catalog a very visible location that is highly effective. Select allows libraries to recommend books, events, newsletters and more all based on the users interests.
Lets look at reasons why catalog enrichment makes a difference in libraries.
The catalog is the librarys most frequently used resource. Is it delivering what library users really want?In a study of online catalog users by the Evansville Public Library, IN:78% of customers requested Similar Titles Recommendations.72% of customers said that having Series Information available was important to them.
Catalog use is changing -- more and more usage is remote. More people are using the library from home, school, wherever. How do these readers discover the depth and breadth of your collection? Charlotte Mecklenburg reports 82% of holds are remote. In Williamsburg Regional Library, VA the number is 89%.Many libraries dont know the answer to this question but most agreeits a lot!
Is your catalog a place where readers can learn about books and resources they didnt already know about? Or is a place where readers come to place on books theyve learned about from others? This is the difference between book delivery and book discovery. Why is it so important? OCLCs From Awareness to Fundinga study of library user voting behaviorfound that library user who viewed the library as place that introduced them to new authors and titles and resources were more likely to vote for increased library funding.
Does your catalog just sit there waiting for someone to use it or is it a key part of your strategy for keeping your library top of mind with your users?E-newsletters like NextReads when they are part of a catalog enrichment plan keep users connected to the library.Lexington Public results:Within a week of a newsletters arrival, circulation of titles in a NextReads newsletter increases by 90%. Within a week of a newsletters arrival, holds on titles in a NextReads newsletter increase by 122%.The number of checkouts for a title featured in NextReads can be expected to almost double. The number of holds placed on a title featured in a NextReads newsletter can be expected to increase by 55% for new titles and 75% for older titles.Source: Lexington Public Library, KY, NextReads Subscriber Survey and Evaluation
Does your stretched-thin staff have the time to deliver the level of service to your readers that you and they want? Especially when the questions relate to series information or finding another book like the one they just read?Select saves staff time and increases the level of customer service.
