Google has been working on an autonomous car project led by Sebastian Thrun, creator of the robotic vehicle Stanley. The project has tested vehicles like the Toyota Prius, Audi TT, and Lexus RX450h, logging over 500,000 accident-free kilometers. The vehicles use a $150,000 software and sensor system, including a $70,000 LIDAR system. Some legal issues around autonomous vehicles have been addressed in the US, where states like Nevada and California have passed legislation, but full commercialization faces disadvantages like an inability to handle some weather conditions and differentiating debris from humans.
