Since 1986 the botanist Pedro Nahoum have been growing native plants from seed in tropical conditions close to the Atlantic Forest, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, in Niterói, Maricá and Quissamã counties. Focused on genetic resources of Bromeliaceae and Cactaceae, Nahoum introduced in greenhouses new wild species, made assisted reproduction and developed new clonal varieties for fruit and flower markets.
