1. Additive Layer Manufacturing
Veel in hoogwaardige systemen te monteren onderdelen ontstaan middels
subtractieve processen, waaronder draaien en frezen. Materiaal wordt ver-
wijderd. Minder bekend is additive layer manufacturing (ALM), waarbij ma-
teriaal wordt toegevoegd, laagsgewijs en zonder een productspecifiek ge-
reedschap. Bij ALM wordt een product als het ware driedimensionaal afge-
drukt, in kunststof, metaal of keramiek. ALM wordt op dit moment onder
meer toegepast in de lucht- en ruimtevaart, de racerij en ook bij de vervaar-
diging en de reparatie van wapensystemen. Met name de Verenigde Staten
van Amerika boeken momenteel veel vooruitgang. De Amerikaanse land-
macht, marine en luchtmacht maken bijvoorbeeld gebruik van Laser Engi-
neered Net Shaping (LENS) om onderdelen met een complexe geometrie
ter plekke te vervaardigen en te repareren. Bij de Amerikaanse landmacht
zijn LENS en soortgelijke vervaardigingsprocessen ge誰ntegreerd in enkele
Mobile Parts Hospitals (MPH) en aanwezig op enkele schepen. Een wezen-
lijk voordeel van ALM is: de periode dat een (deel van) een wapensysteem
niet inzetbaar is, is kort en niet afhankelijk van wat aan reserveonderdelen
beschikbaar is of komt. Overigens worden dergelijke processen ook steeds
vaker door de desbetreffende producenten van wapensystemen toegepast.

2. Prognostics & Health Management (onderhoud en inzetbaarheid)
Vooruitzien is regeren!
Vroeger, ten tijde van de Koude Oorlog, was het agenderen van te verrich-
ten onderhoudswerkzaamheden betrekkelijk eenvoudig: de omvang van
zulke activiteiten was hoegenaamd stabiel en vervangende onderdelen wa-
ren ofwel voorradig, ofwel waren voldoende vervangende systemen be-
schikbaar (KL). Tegenwoordig komt bij onderhoud van materieel beduidend
meer om de hoek kijken: onderdelen zijn complexer, er is minder personeel,
er is minder geld en er zijn meer uitzendingen, waardoor het gebruik van
materieel nu veel grilliger is dan vroeger. Reden genoeg om meer techni-
sche gegevens te verzamelen, deels centraal te verwerken, statistisch te
analyseren en te benutten voor besluitvorming.
Het statistisch verwerken van technische gegevens is zonder meer
waardevol. Het geeft inzicht in te verwachten defecten en dus ook in
toekomstige kosten en, belangrijker, inzetbaarheid. Verzamelde gegevens
kunnen on-board worden benut, bijvoorbeeld om een tankcommandant te
adviseren zijn systeem op een andere manier te belasten, waarmee hij de
effectiviteit van zijn systeem verhoogt. Ook off-board zijn dergelijke
gegevens waardevol: welke systemen wordt een eenheid bij een uitzending
ter hand gesteld en wanneer gaan welke onderdelen met welke
waarschijnlijkheid kapot? Prognostics & health management (PHM) is
onderdeel van het JSF-project, meer specifiek: de bijdrage van Perot
Systems Nederland. Vergelijkbare oplossingen maken deel uit van diverse
(toekomstige) landsystemen, waaronder de Styker (General Dynamics).
Andere stappen in de goede richting betreffen Fennek (KMW: onder meer
faalanalyses) en de Fuchs (Rheinmetall in samenwerking met SAP:
Embedded Logistics enhances the operational efficiency and availability of
vehicles and weapon systems by streamlining logistics and maintenance
processes).

3. Integrated prognostics/diagnostics to provide advance warning and malfunctions and thus
drastically reduce the adverse impact of field repairs. Particularly important is the pres-
ence of a comprehensive prognostics/diagnostics system, that is expected to allow for a
drastic simplification of the maintenance structure (currently on four levels) through the pre-
emptive replacement of failing components. The IETM (Integrated Electronic Technical Man-
ual) of the FTTS demonstrators is a very sophisticated device with detailed audio/visual
presentations and warnings to the crew*, and thus a far cry from current prognos-
tics/diagnostics systems that normally require an external station to take the readings of their
sensors.

4. Rein van der Mast
Reeds in de jaren negentig paste Rein van der Mast rapid technologies
(RT) toe. Sindsdien heeft hij veelvuldig over het onderwerp in vakbladen
gepubliceerd en is hij, onder meer later dit jaar als dagvoorzitter betrokken
enkele, deels internationale evenementen op dit vlak. Veel belangstelling
heeft hij voor de optimalisatie van uiteenlopende bedrijfsprocessen. Hij is
actief reservist (KL) en bezit daarnaast een adviesbureau dat bedrijven
helpt hun processen op het gebied van onder meer product- en
productieontwikkeling te verbeteren. Zijn wens is om, liefst als reservist, zijn
kennis ook aan Defensie beschikbaar te stellen.
