This lesson plan outlines a class on paraphrasing academic texts. The objectives are for students to paraphrase, explain, and discuss the importance of paraphrasing texts using their own words. Students will read a selection on competition and cooperation and work in groups to answer questions about the similarities and differences between the concepts. They will then define paraphrasing, identify the basic steps to paraphrase, and discuss its importance. As an activity, students will paraphrase sentences from the text in their own words. A formative test asks students to define paraphrasing, list the paraphrasing steps, and explain its importance through short essays. Setting of Classroom Rules 5. Review B. LESSON PROPER B.1 Motivation The learners will be divided into two (2) groups. They will be having a spelling contest. Ten words will be given. For every word to be spelled, each team will choose its representative who will compete with the other team. 1. What have you observed about our activity? 2. Did you enjoy it? 3. What are the important values you learned when working with a group? Video clip viewing about paraphrasing. B.2 Activity The learners will read the selection, Competition and Cooperation. Based on their previous group, they will work together and answer the following question. 1. Have you noticed the similarities and/or contradiction of the words competition and cooperation? 2. Is there cooperation, if theres a competition? Explain. 3. Does cooperation only occurs when there is competition? 4. Paraphrase the definition of competition and cooperation.
B.3 Analysis 1. Define paraphrasing. 2. What are the basic steps in paraphrasing? 3. Is paraphrasing important? B.4 Abstraction What is paraphrasing? Enumerate the steps in paraphrasing.
