Ron was raised on a fishing boat in Long Island Sound. He was illiterate until the age of thirteen, when his father traded two dozen crabs caught using a flashlight while illegally fishing at night for a used accordian and some Hardy Boys mysteries. Ron had desperately wanted to learn to play the piano but his father convinced him an accordian was more practical as it could be easily carried to weddings or auditions for the Lawrence Welk Show.
After getting bored with playing The Beer Barrel Polka, Camptown Races and Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes and playing in an all accordian band, Ron performed in a number of High School plays, including Bert Cates in Inherit the Wind and a drunk in
