HISTORY
.The Maasai originated (north-west Kenya) in the
lower Nile Valley,Central Tanzania and Northern
Kenya during the 17th and 18 century.
.They began migrating south in the 15th century.
. Maasai territory reached its most dominant size in
the 19 century.
GEOGRAPHY
.The Maasai Tribes are thought to have
originated in the Upper Nile Valley.
. Estimates of the Maasai population
include more than 150,000 in Tanzania,
and close to 150,000 in Kenya.
CULTURE
 The Maasai have a rich collection of oral
literature that includes myths, legends,
folktales, riddles, and proverbs.
 Women are seldom at a loss for melodies
and words.
 The Maasai also compose many songs.
FOOD
 The Maasai depend on
cattle for both food and
cooking utensils .
 . The traditional Maasai
diet consists of six basic
foods: meat, blood, milk,
fat, honey, and tree bark.
 Children and old people
may eat cornmeal or rice
porridge and drink tea
with sugar.
HOUSES
. .The Maasai live in
Kraals arranged in a
circular fashion.
.The Inkajijik (maasai
word for a house) are
loaf-shaped and made
of mud, sticks, grass,
cow dung and cow's
urine.
CUSTOMS
.The Maasai tribe is
traditionally a
seminomadic tribe.
.The Masai have a
reputation of being a fierce
warring tribe.
.Women and children keep
their heads shaved while
the morani wear their hair
in long braids dyed with
red clay.
CLOTHING
 Red is a favored colour.
Blue, black, striped, and
checkered cloth are also
worn, as are
multicolored African
designs.
 The Maasai began to
replace animal-skin, calf
hides and sheep skin,
with commercial cotton
cloth in the 1960s.
 . Sh炭k is the Maa word
for sheets traditionally
worn wrapped around
the body.
OCCUPATION
 The man's responsibility
is his cattle.
 Women raise children,
maintain the home,
cook, and do the
milking..
 . . A boy begins herding
at the age of four by
looking after lambs and
young calves
