Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I returned with my mother to the small town in which she had grown up, after my father's death, when I was three years old. Growing up near my mother's family, I was greatly influenced by my grandfather. My family's occupation was hunting, trapping fur-bearing animals, fishing and other seasonal businesses. My grandfather taught me this trade when I was a young boy, and I spent much of my early years in remote areas of the swamps and bayous of Louisiana.
