Watson is an entirely new form of computing, one that promises to discover hitherto undiscovered insights based on the wealth of data all around us. While traditional computer models have relied on rigid mathematic principles, utilising software built upon rules and logic, Watson instead relies on what IBM is calling cognitive computing. Watson was the named after IBMs first CEO.
What is IBM Watson? Watson is a customized computer system designed by IBM researchers to deliver a single, precise answer to question posed in natural language. Following its tradition of grand challenges, IBM will pit watson against human player on jeopardy! to test this scientific achievements and refine its potential application in the field of science, fiance, healthcare, and industry.

Hardware Watson made up of a cluster of ninety IBM Power 750 servers with a 2880 Power 7 processors cores and 16 terabytes of RAM. Watson can process 500 gigabytes, the equivalent of a million books, per second. Watsons hardware cost at about $3 million and with 80 TeraFlops would be placed on 94th on the top 500 supercomputer list,and 49th on the top 50 supercomputer list. The content was stored in watsons RAM for the game because data stored on hard drives are too slow to access data.
