Shirley Pullan was born in Leeds, into a modest family of older brother and sister, her father, an engineering draftsman and her mother, a part-time telephonist and administrator.
Her arrival came some months after the moon landing, but notably, after having waited for 3 weeks after the due date, just in time for the Isle of White Festival. In the same year Bernard Katz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work on synaptic transmission. Forty years later, this research is still as important as ever, as the search for drugs against psychiatric illnesses continues.
Despite the initial wishes of her father, Shirley went on to further education, to University to study Cell Biolog
