Call for Papers
Due to the increase of renewable energy penetration the reliability and stability aspects of power
system are becoming a major concern for grid operators. In this regard, continuous efforts have been
observed in recent years to improve the control techniques for different renewable power sources. In
addition focus has also been given in the development of various controllers for different types of
flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) and energy storage devices. Application of robust nonlinear
controller in power system and renewable energy sectors is getting popular these days. The overall
problem is becoming more challenging for the heuristic type of controls and more sophisticated and
model based controllers is becoming a must to overcome the aforementioned problems. This special
session focuses in different types of nonlinear, intelligent control techniques applied in renewable
energy and power system applications.

Voltage Stabilization of a Wind Turbine with STATCOM Using Intelligent Contro...ijeei-iaes

Application of FACTS controller called Static Synchronous Compensator STATCOM to improve the performance of power grid with Wind System is investigated. The essential feature of the STATCOM is that it has the ability to absorb or inject fastly reactive power with power grid. Therefore the voltage regulation of the power grid with STATCOM FACTS device is achieved. Moreover restoring the stability of the wind system at suddenly step up or down in wind speed is obtained with STATCOM. This paper describes a complete simulation of voltage regulation of a wind system using STATCOM. Conventional control technique as proportional plus integral controller , and intelligent techniques as FLC and ANFIS are used in this work. The control technique is performed using MATLAB package software. The dynamic response of uncontrolled system is also investigated under wide range of disturbances. The voltage regulation by using STATCOM whose output is varied so as to maintain or control output voltage in the system. The dynamic response of controlled system is shown and comparison between the uncontrolled system and the controlled system is described to assure the validity of the proposed controller. Also comparison between the proposed control methods scheme is presented. To validate the powerful of the STATCOM FACTS controllers, the studied power system is simulated and subjected to different severe disturbances. The results prove the effectiveness of the proposed STATCOM controller in terms of fast damping the power system oscillations and restoring the power system stability and voltage.

The objective of this paper is to study the dynamic response of the wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The DFIG rotor is connected to the grid via a converter. The active and reactive power control is realized by the DFIG rotor variables control, using the field oriented control (FOC). The vector control of DFIG is applied by the use of tow regulators PI and the neural network regulator (NN). The generator mathematical model is implemented in Matlab/ Simulink software to simulate a DFIG of 1.5 MW in order to show the efficiency of the performances and robustness of the studied control systems. The simulation obtained results shows that the robustness and response time of the neural network regulator is better than those obtained by the PI classical regulator.

The development in electric power production is focused on the interconnecting the transmission lines, generators and loads into huge integrated systems, which helps in providing reliable and quality power system to the consumers.Power system stability is an idea that focuses on the way the system adjusts with the occurrence of disorder. These disorders can result because of switching off a load or a modification in the mechanical input to the system. Because of these disturbances oscillations may happen in the system that could ultimately build up to a larger extent, resulting in the synchronous generators to go out of step and lose synchronism.Due to the importance of the power system and its stability, there are several techniques developed by various researchers for the stabilization of the power systems. The paper addresses enhanced Artificial Bee Colony ABC technique applied to design a robust power system stabilizer PSS in order to improve transient and dynamic stabilities of a turbo alternator connected to an infinite bus system comparisons wind, thermal and solar power generations the design of the proposed controller initially is formulated as an optimization problem and then enhanced ABC is employed for obtaining optimal controller parameters. The results shows that the proposed algorithm are better in performance than the conventional methods. A Simple Active and Reactive Power Control for Applications of Single-Phase E...Asoka Technologies

Aiming at effective power management in microgrids with high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs), the paper proposes a simple power control for the so-called second-generation, single-phase electric springs (ES-2), that overcomes the shortcomings of the existing ES control methods. By the proposed control, the unpredictable power generated from RESs is divided into two parts, i.e. the one absorbed by the ES-2 that still varies and the other injected into the grid that turns to be controllable, by a simple and accurate signal manipulation that works both at steady-state and during RES transients. It is believed that such a control is suitable for the distributed power generation, especially at domestic homes. In the paper, the proposed control is supported by a theoretical background. Its effectiveness is at first validated by simulations and then by experiments. To this purpose, a typical RES application is considered, and an experimental setup is arranged, built up around an ES-2 implementing the proposed control. Testing of the setup is carried out in three steps and proves not only the smooth operation of the ES-2 itself, but also its capability in running the application properly.

This document describes a study comparing PI and LQR controllers for frequency regulation including wind generation. The study models doubly-fed induction generator wind turbines using a synthetic inertia method to emulate the inertial response of conventional machines. Both PI and LQR secondary controllers are implemented and tested in a simulation of a modified 3-machine 9-bus test power system with wind turbine integration. Results show the LQR controller provides overall superior performance but requires more control effort from conventional units compared to the PI controller.

The paper deals with a design and implementation of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind energy conversion system (WECS) connected to the power grid. A back-to-back AC/DC/AC converter is incorporated between the stator and the rotor windings of a DFIG, in order to obtain variable speed operation. The DFIG can be controlled from sub-synchronous speed to super synchronous speed operation. The main objective of the paper is to control the flow of the Active and Reactive powers produced by the DFIG based wind energy conversion system. A vector control strategy with stator flux orientation is applied to both the grid side converter and the rotor side converter for the independent control of Active and reactive powers produced by the DFIG based wind energy conversion system. The system along with its control circuit were simulated in a Matlab/simulink and the results are presented and discussed.

This paper introduces modelling and simulation of Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) of Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). Two Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) converters have been connected back to back from the rotor terminals to the utility grid via a dc-link. Vector control system typically controlled by a set of PI controllers, which have an important effect on the performance of system dynamics. This paper presents an optimally tuned PI controllers design of a DFIG wind energy system connected to grid using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO). PSO and GWO used to optimize PI controller parameters of both Grid side converter (GSC), and Rotor side converter (RSC) to improve the dynamic operation of the DFIG wind energy system under a variable speed condition.

This paper presents a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to tune the gains of an integral controller for load frequency control (LFC) in a single-area power system with multiple energy sources (thermal, hydro, gas, and wind). The objective is to minimize the integral absolute error of frequency deviations following a step load change. Simulation results show the PSO-tuned integral controller provides better transient response than an uncontrolled system, with reduced settling time, peak overshoot, and oscillations.
