He worked for compressor design at BHEL, Hyderabad, renowned manufacturers for Fertiliser, Refinery and Petrochemicals in India ( 31 yrs ) followed by at QuEST, Bangalore (5 years) as chief engineer and for 2 years at Turbotech, Bangalore
While BHEL had the credit of supplying compressors for most of the refineries in India, Mr. Subbarao had the credit of being the designer for the design of most of the machines during his tenure.
