In 2001, I rode an elephant in Thailand into a jungle where I saw people who lived tin shacks with satellite dishes on rooftops and small generators for power. They were connecting to the world.
I saw that creating internet access was becoming a hot business in small towns in Thailand - kids paid a few precious baht to line up 3 deep at computers to connect outside of where they lived.
That was a turning point for me. I began a shift from working in a Dept of Defense that supported the world as it was. I decided that I could make the most difference by continuing to work inside of DoD but with a different focus - to enable a new connected world to emerge, with DoD as part of a broader
