Ever since my early days at school, I used to inquire from teachers about nature of surfaces. 鈥淕od made solids 鈥� but surfaces were the work of devil鈥� as quoted by Wolfgang Pauli. I used to ask myself: 鈥淲hy some of the surfaces are hard while others soft? 鈥淲hy surface changes from smooth to rough with usage? My final year undergraduate project on quality control of paints, proved nothing but a catalyst to enhance my desire to study surfaces. I worked on surface mechanical characteristics of polymers with Prof. Brian J. Briscoe at Imperial College London. Principal research area was surface mechanical and tribological studies of polymers and their composites at micro as well as nano scales....
