Is There A Difference Between
Coaching & Teaching?
Coaching is NOT teaching - let's get clear
about that. (Although it may sometimes
include some teaching elements).
Teaching is imparting information to another in
such a way that they are able to learn it - i.e.
remember and hopefully apply it. Think back to
school or college for examples of teachers.
Coaching is enabling someone to 鍖nd and
discover their own inner resources, answers,
strengths and abilities. Coaches encourage
and support and guide.
Teachers may well do that too, but
fundamentally the goal of teaching
is different to coaching.
The confusion arises because the
student's question is often the same in
both cases - i.e. "How do you do X?"
If it's, "How do you build a chicken coop?" or "How do
you play 3 Steps To Heaven on a guitar?" then a teacher
is 鍖ne. Step by step, chord by chord ... there's a method
that can be learned and copied and therefore taught.
But the question has a different
meaning for coaches.
When I was 鍖rst asked how I was making money from my
websites, my brain went into a spin because - step by step - I
didn't know! It had kind of happened organically and then I
had to "reverse engineer" what I'd done to see if I could teach
it.
I tried - and most of my early
students got nowhere.
Because step by step wasn't
the answer.
The true answer was more to do
with, "I let my ideas 鍖ow. I trust my
instincts. I dare to ask for help ..."
And there's NO clear pathway.
Just FLOW TRUST ASK.
(Rinse and repeat!)
So now, when someone asks me how I make money online, if
they want my coaching I free them to become more of
themselves. I show them where their personal power lies. I
enable change, but I never try to create a clone or cookie-
cutter version of what I've done.
Because ultimately, that would just
be TEACHING them to try to be me!
And neither of us would want
that!
Hope that helps.
