3. Introduction:
What is Transmedia Storytelling?
Introduced by Henry Jenkins - a single story or storyworld can be told across a variety of media,
including films, television shows, books, comics, video games, websites, and social media.
As Henry Jenkins explains,
Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed
systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated
entertainment experience. (Jenkins)
He also gives some key ideas of Transmedia Storytelling(Jenkins)
Complex Fictional World -Sustains multiple interrelated characters and their stories
Constructed narrative- Coordination of Different Media Sectors
Gaps and Excesses in the upholding of the story- introduce potential plots which can not be
fully told or extra details which hint at more than can be revealed- Readers have a strong
incentive to continue to elaborate on these story elements.
Each part makes unique contribution
4. Expands the potential market for a property by creating different points of entry for
different audience and economic imperative
Derek Johnson notes that transmedia storytelling suggests cultural artistry and participatory
culture, franchising calls equal if not more attention to corporate structure and the economic
organization of that productive labor.(Johnson)
Ex, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Ring, The Matrix
All these are fictional stories which goes beyond reality
Franchise
5. Transmedia Storytelling and Adaptation
Transmedia Storytelling can be in two ways:
Adaptation is a version or retelling of the original, whereas an extension goes beyond the original, like
expanding timeline, developing back story of a secondary character.(Jenkins, Henry. Adaptation, Extension, Transmedia)
