Finding both open-source and proprietary databases interesting, I am willing to work on either, but my experience until now has been with SQL Server. Since big data is the norm today, people often talk about NoSQL solutions (often refering to it as "say no to SQL", instead of "not only SQL"); too often, in my experience. Therefore, I often advocate SQL, i.e. transaction-based solutions if that is the appropriate technology, rather than trying to place a relational problem into a technology that is meant for something else.
