Velma Anne Ruth has been working with nonprofit organizations since 1992. She originally worked with children in creative arts therapies, before going into research and development in 2000. Velma founded ABS to support local partnerships between education, health and human services, and criminal justice in 2001. Efforts between 1999-2004 benefitted local violence prevention in Mashhad, Iran, and policy development for criminal justice in the US,. Post-Iraq invasion, Velma amended ABS initiatives with financial and economic research in nonprofits, government, and philanthropy.
