In mathematics an Identity function will take an input value as an argument, and always give you back an output value equal to its input argument. One expression of an equality may represent an object, or element that initially appears different to another expression. Yet, after a bit of time working with the differences of this equality we can tell that each expression will satisfy the same function or purpose.
