Currently on the last leg (Dec 2015-Dec, 2016) of my doctor studies (PhD Food Science) under the supervision of Prof. Elna M. Buys. My research is investigating the prevalence of pathogenic Escherichia coli within food and environmental sources. The study has involved developing a real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay for simultaneous detection of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes in E. coli. Additionally it will involve determining prevalence of diarrheagenic pathotypes within food and environmental sources as well as their ability to cause intestinal inflammation.
